Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was making connections with others. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your major concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with people sharing similar experiences. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and activities to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can choose to be anything, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to meet like-minded people.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such a setting can be tough on your self-esteem; you may see your peers studying and feel you’re falling short. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from your fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are amazing. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support offered. You can never have an excess of help!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy my time even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
