Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize that this academic year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet new people. Sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely ready or comfortable, no need to stress! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals within the program and university, you are sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger one from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also find it baffling. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They connect with students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I previously mentioned the importance of taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this part of university life is to capitalize on the support being offered. You can never have too much of that!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university life, are nearly always unwarranted and can be alleviated by the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly on my own, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
