Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and ample enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most formidable hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome elements of launching into university life, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be among your largest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodations, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve built a secondary family here at Imperial, and all it took was initiating casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. The diversity among individuals in the course and at the university means you’re sure to encounter people like you.

Another challenge was the burden of coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be quite daunting for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is on the same journey as you. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you that there are at least several others who also don’t get it. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had sooner. I spoke of taking leaps at the outset; I made one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always irrational and can be mitigated with the multitude of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to relish my experiences alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
