Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was inundated with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Now reflecting, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your significant concerns. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a few casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s essential to take a bold step at the beginning of the academic year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with peers. I’ve also understood that being true to yourself is crucial. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re bound to encounter those who share your interests.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in numerous ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. What assisted me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be one of the most crucial lessons to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to us and uphold consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps previously – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position enabled me to build connections with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s demonstrated that I’m never isolated and taught me how to find joy despite pressures like examinations and deadlines.
