Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most challenging obstacles was making friends. This is often one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be among your primary concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever had, both here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small talk with individuals experiencing similar situations. So, what did I come to realize? I learned that taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will be available to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable transition from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel out of your depth. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost guarantee that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek assistance from your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and engage in ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support available. You can never benefit from too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
