About ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my dormitory, days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to step out and meet others. However, today I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I realized it’s important to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or anxious, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will arise to help you engage with others. I also learned that staying true to yourself is vital. With a wide array of personalities in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another difficulty was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can shake your confidence; witnessing others study might make you feel inadequate. A couple of things helped me navigate this sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone else is experiencing similar challenges. If you find a concept difficult, I can nearly guarantee that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for help!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students endure. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did so by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this element of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In conclusion, this year revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be mitigated with the backing of staff and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
