Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be among your primary worries. On my first day settling into my residence, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet other students. However, today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and during my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the outset of the year is invariably advantageous. If you’re not entirely ready or comfortable, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to come across those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was managing the workload and the level of complexity in the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some instances, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can weigh heavily on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same predicament. If you’re perplexed by something, I can nearly guarantee that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your colleagues and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are committed to your success and acknowledge that students face challenges. They empathize with students and keep us updated throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referred to taking risks before – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to build relationships with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance provided. There’s no such thing as too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have a good time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
