Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day confined to my room because I was too nervous to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with striking up conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a leap at the start of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to help you connect with your peers. I also learned that, if you can choose one thing to be, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, a greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me cope with that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost promise that there are others who are also confused. So, ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me with the opportunity to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway from this part of university life is to take full advantage of the support that is available to you. There is no such thing as too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the abundant support options provided by both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has revealed how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
