Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Entering the unknown wasn’t something my previous timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of fun! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most daunting hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can confidently state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, initiated by casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what lesson did I acquire? I found that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always a good idea. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals at the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same path. If a concept eludes you, I can nearly assure you that others also grapple with it. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps previously – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has made me realize that I’m never on my own, and it has shown me how to have fun even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
