Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and unpredictability regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I perceive a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Today, however, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of my closest friendships here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is crucial. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the amount of work and difficulty of the content. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me get past this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having trouble understanding something, I can almost guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most valuable lesson to grasp in the initial year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to engage with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance that is available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the varied support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
