Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not what my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more fear-inducing aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your chief worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too apprehensive to step out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always wise to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel quite prepared or at ease, relax! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also found that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you are sure to meet people like you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was unquestionably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment doesn’t always boost your confidence; you might see others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares your struggle. If you find something challenging, I can nearly guarantee that there are several others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance being offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

On a broader scale, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are typically baseless and can be mitigated through the numerous support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy my life even alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
