Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Reflecting on the past ten months, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. For someone like me, who was previously shy and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Looking back, this year has been marked by personal development, hurdles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the most daunting initial hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my moving-in day, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the most outstanding friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, initiated by casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always a wise move. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I encountered was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an elevation from A-levels, and in some instances, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that we are all in this together. If something confuses you, I can nearly guarantee that others are also struggling with it. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to master in your first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, often lack justification and can be mitigated through the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and has taught me how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
