Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be one of your major concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, reflecting from this vantage point, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in some casual conversation with people in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I recognized that it’s advantageous to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to assist in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter others who share your interests.

Another challenge was the sheer volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some instances, a greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such surroundings can test your self-confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel lacking. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something doesn’t click for you, I can almost guarantee there are others who feel the same. Hence, reach out for assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek guidance from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and ensure ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns throughout the academic year. I did not fully leverage the support available until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned about taking risks – I engaged in one at the start of the year by serving as a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to get to know the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university is to fully utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support systems available through faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
