Back in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was prepared for. Reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a time brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting components of transitioning to university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be among your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I felt too daunted to step outside and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small talk with others experiencing the same situation. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one principle, it should be to be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and the university, you are sure to encounter those who share your interests.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an environment can shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements aided me in overcoming those feelings, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost guarantee that there are at least a few others who are also puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow students and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our struggles. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most out of the support that is offered to you. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support avenues provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has shown me how to enjoy myself alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
