By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. I wasn’t accustomed to immersing myself in new experiences. Looking back over the past year, I recognize a journey of development, obstacles, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the early obstacles was forming friendships, a challenging endeavor for new university students. On my first day in my accommodation, I secluded myself in my room, overwhelmed by the prospect of meeting new individuals. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends here, establishing a second family at Imperial. The essential lesson? Take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t be concerned—numerous opportunities will arise to meet others. Be true to yourself, and you’ll attract like-minded individuals.

The demands of coursework and the complexity of the material were additional challenges. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inadequate, but keep in mind that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, chances are, others feel the same way. Don’t hesitate to seek help—it’s vital during the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty for guidance.

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are committed to helping students succeed and recognize the struggles we endure. They provide ongoing support and communication. I did not access the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I decided to become a year well-being representative, which facilitated my connection with the staff. Building rapport with faculty is priceless. Make the most of the support available; you can never have too much assistance.

This year has shown me that pre-university apprehensions are frequently exaggerated and can be eased with the support that is accessible. I have discovered that I am never alone and can have fun, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
