Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainties regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a journey of personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more overwhelming aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be among your largest concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day secluded in my room out of fear of stepping out and greeting others. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve found some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it only required initiating light conversation with others in similar situations as mine. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s always best to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to connect with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it is yourself. With the wide variety of individuals within the program and university, you’re sure to encounter people who share your interests.

Another challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes be tough on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar circumstances. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are also struggling with it. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one early in the year by becoming a year well-being representative. Holding this role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is highly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s definitely one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this university aspect is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

On a broader scale, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in preparation for and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated by the various support options present from faculty and fellow students. It’s made me realize that I’m never alone, and it has also taught me how to find joy alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
