Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year offer, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the idea of stepping outside and introducing myself to others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best bonds at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s advisable to take initiative at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events are available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, simply be yourself. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first semester to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me during this time, including the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp something, I can almost guarantee that there are others who share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want to see you succeed and appreciate the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking initiatives earlier – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the support provided. There’s no such thing as too much help!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to relish my experiences alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
