By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Just ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embarking on this unfamiliar journey was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting factors when entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, days ahead of the semester commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say that I have developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and on this course. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I come to understand? I discovered that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and activities designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you will undoubtedly encounter people who resonate with you.

Another difficulty was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a challenging environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few key strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, I can practically assure you there are others who are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your fellow students and the faculty for support!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks at the beginning; I did took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it is certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
