Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a voyage of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and for any prospective students reading this, it may top your list of concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes commencing, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in casual conversations with individuals facing similar circumstances. So, what did I realize? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people like yourself.

An additional challenge was the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling with it too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most essential lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and are aware that students face difficulties. They are compassionate towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I touched on taking leaps previously – I did embrace one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both preceding and during university, are generally unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and due dates.
