Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my once shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I garnered this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective learner, it might rank among your top concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and engage with others. However, seated here today, I can assertively declare that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I could have hoped for at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with peers in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always a good idea to take a chance when the year starts. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors supported me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares this experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also find it confusing. So, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with the student body and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke about taking leaps before – I made one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has enlightened me to the fact that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s illustrated how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
