Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead as I commenced my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy self was familiar with. Now, in hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This can be quite daunting when starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to socialize with others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships at university and within my course. I discovered a second family at Imperial, starting with light conversations with others facing similar experiences. What did I learn? It’s beneficial to take a risk at the onset of the year. If you’re not ready, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, be genuine. Among such a diverse crowd, you’ll find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a challenging environment can impact your self-esteem; you may feel inferior compared to your peers. Keep in mind that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, others probably are too. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students face. They listen and maintain dialogue regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to engage with faculty—an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unfounded and can be alleviated through support from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
