Authored by Dawson La, Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back, I can see a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of fun! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This can be among the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your main worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I remained in my room all day, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly state that I have made some of the closest friends here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not quite ready or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be plenty of social events designed to help you meet others. I also learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first semester to the second. Existing in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; witnessing others study might leave you feeling inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others share the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students endure. They are empathetic towards us and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I truly wish I had sooner. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I made one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary message is to make the most of the available support. You can never have an excess of assistance!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and peers. It has revealed to me that I’m never on my own and has taught me how to find joy amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
