Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I faced was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your prime worries. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, daunted by the prospect of venturing out and meeting others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had while at university and within my course. I discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through light conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that regardless of how you feel, taking a chance at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you aren’t prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be hard on your self-esteem; witnessing others study might make you feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost promise that others share your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This transitions me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I embraced one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to relish my experiences alongside pressures like exams and deadlines.
