Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking parts of commencing university, and if you are an aspiring student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What have I gained from this? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, no need to fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. Also, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel inadequate when comparing yourself to your peers. Keep in mind that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you don’t grasp a concept, others probably don’t, either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial ability to cultivate during your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty for help!
The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to excel and are aware of the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and maintain communication throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which aided in connecting with staff, a truly rewarding experience. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take! My key takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!
This year has shown me that anxious feelings regarding university are usually unfounded and can be eased through the support offered by faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and have learned how to have fun even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
