Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I can see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year provided me with, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I had to encounter was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your chief worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that taking a risk at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also understood that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to tackle was the workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you there are others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and ensure constant communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. You can never have an excess!

In a broader sense, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the various support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s shown me how to enjoy life even alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
