Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was foreign to my previously timid and reserved nature. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it likely stands as one of your main concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, within this university and this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will assist you in connecting with others. I also grasped that if you can be anything, be your true self. With such a diverse array of people across the course and campus, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was coping with the workload and the complexity of content. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can often challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors helped me conquer that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are facing difficulties too. Therefore, seek support. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Request assistance from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep open communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking chances – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much help!

On the whole, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the myriad of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has illuminated the fact that I am never alone and has shown me how to find joy amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
