Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Now looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?
One of the first and most overwhelming hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most intimidating parts of commencing university, and for prospective students, it might pose a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into accommodation, just a few days before classes began, I spent the entire day in my room, overly daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from initiating small dialogues with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? It’s advisable to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if there’s one thing to be, it’s your true self. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a marked transition from A-levels, and an even more significant one from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you may feel inferior compared to peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same waters. If something isn’t clear to you, it probably isn’t to others either. Therefore, seek help. This could be the most vital lesson from the first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are phenomenal. They truly want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the entire year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until near the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position facilitated my connection with the staff, which is remarkably valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for your well-being! My primary lesson is to utilize the support available. There’s no such thing as too much help!
Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the assistance available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
