Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Embarking on this new adventure was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks high among the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent all day in my room, too frightened to step out and meet anyone. However, I can now proudly assert that I’ve built some of the strongest friendships here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I taken away? It’s essential to take a chance at the year’s start. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events will be available to facilitate connections with others. Also, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase compared to A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being in this environment can influence your confidence; you might feel inferior when compared to your peers. Keep in mind that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are confused as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties that students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication regarding any concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps—one of those was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to get to know faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main lesson is to utilize the support provided. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and learned how to have fun despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
