By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to start my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what takeaways do I have, and how have I progressed?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was the task of making friends. This is frequently one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it might be your primary worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day hidden in my room, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I realized that taking a risk at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not yet prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being cast into such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for support!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!
Overall, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the extensive support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
