Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fears, and uncertainties regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks among the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into accommodation, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the full day cooped up in my room, feeling too daunted to step out and introduce myself. However, today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, it should be your genuine self. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge I faced was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was indeed a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can occasionally be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me through that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who are equally perplexed. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be one of the most crucial lessons to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the finest actions you can undertake for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have an excess!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be diminished with the support systems provided by staff and peers. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to find joy amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
