Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into uncharted territory was not something my formerly timid and withdrawn self was familiar with. Looking back, I can see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most formidable challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your chief worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I’ve also come to understand that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people across the program and university, you’re bound to meet individuals like yourself.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you that there are others who also find it puzzling. So, seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty members in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to excel and understand the challenges students face. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are abundant opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance offered. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In conclusion, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support mechanisms provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to relish my experience despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
