Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my once-timid self was prepared for. Looking back, I recognize a year rife with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more nerve-wracking elements of initiating university life, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodations, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Sitting here today, I can assertively claim that I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve formed a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that it’s always advisable to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, fret not! There will be abundant ice-breaker activities and occasions to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a challenging environment can sometimes be a blow to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that impression, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost assure you there are at least several others in the same predicament. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the support offered until late in the year, but I now wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are plenty of avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My principal lesson from this facet of university is to capitalize on the help you’re receiving. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased by the plethora of support avenues available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
