Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy self was accustomed to. Looking back on the academic year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. Yet, what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most overwhelming obstacles was forming friendships. This is often a major worry for new university students, and I was no exception. On my inaugural day in my new accommodation, just before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet people. Now, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all by initiating small talk with others in similar circumstances. The crucial takeaway? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t stress—numerous ice-breaker events will facilitate connections with others. Keep in mind, be authentic, and you’ll discover individuals who resonate with you.

Another challenge involved managing the workload and the intricacy of the material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more significant. Such an environment can be challenging for your confidence, particularly when you find yourself comparing to others. Nevertheless, it’s essential to remember that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If you’re confused about something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most critical lesson for first-year students—reach out to peers and staff for assistance.

This brings me to my next point: the faculty in the Materials department is outstanding. They genuinely want students to thrive and comprehend the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our worries. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wished I had taken advantage of it sooner. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to engage with staff members—a rewarding experience. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. The main takeaway here is to embrace the support offered. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension linked to starting and attending university is often unwarranted and can be alleviated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
