Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into housing, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to step out and meet others. Now, however, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the best friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with fellow students in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, that’s alright! There are numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to help you engage with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another struggle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can shake your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What supported me was recalling that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, likely others don’t either. Hence, seek help. This is perhaps the most vital ability to cultivate in the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the challenges faced by students. They show empathy and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to build relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often groundless and can be mitigated with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It made me realize that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
