Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Taking the plunge into the unknown was not something my former shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I can see a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted on me, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating facets of beginning university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it could be one of your largest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes beginning, I spent the whole day in my room, too shy to step out and greet anyone. Sitting here today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve built some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced by engaging in casual conversations with others in similar scenarios. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be genuine. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter people like yourself.

Another obstacle I had to navigate was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a demanding environment can definitely test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me manage those sentiments, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are at least a few others who are also puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They resonate with our struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I did make one at the year’s beginning by becoming a wellbeing representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

In a broader sense, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unwarranted and can be eased by the multitude of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
