Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Upon reflection, I recognize an academic year filled with personal growth, hurdles, and lots of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be a major concern for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted by the thought of stepping out to greet others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both here at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in some casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s often advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will arise to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be your authentic self. With a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to meet others who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I had to overcome was the intensity of the workload and the level of difficulty of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain regards, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is in a similar situation as you. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who share the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Request help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and are aware that students face difficulties. They connect with us continually throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did make one at the start of the year when I became a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to get acquainted with the faculty members, which is an incredibly valuable opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this specific aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being offered. You can never have too much!

Overarching, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the myriad of support options accessible from both faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has helped me learn how to enjoy myself amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
