Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was apprehensive and uncertain about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my housing, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and engage with others. Nowadays, however, I can assertively say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all blossomed from casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I glean? I discovered that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is crucial. With so many varied individuals across the program and university, you’re bound to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was surely a transition from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can influence your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things aided me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, the likelihood is that others might be confused too. So, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My central takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated with the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never truly alone and taught me how to find joy despite pressures like exams and submission deadlines.
