By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t a norm for my previously shy and reserved self. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was establishing friendships. This is without a doubt one of the more fearsome aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I discover? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you engage with others. I also recognized that if you are to be anything, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to discover kindred spirits.
Another challenge was the demanding workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your confidence; you may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to both your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to achieve and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position permitted me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s surely one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support offered. You can never have too much!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
