**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in a haze of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, leaping into this new phase felt overwhelming. Reflecting on an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve developed and the distance I’ve traveled. So, what insights has this year imparted on me, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. This is a significant concern for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Now, reflecting on my journey, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like family to me. It all began with small steps, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally nervous.

What did I take away from this encounter? Firstly, making that first leap of faith is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous chances to connect with others will arise through ice-breaking events and social gatherings. Secondly, the most beneficial approach is simply to be authentic. Given the rich diversity of people at university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another key challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and the rigorous material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when observing peers diligently studying and thriving.

What assisted me through this was understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Cultivating the ability to seek support is arguably the most vital skill to develop during your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, one of the most remarkable elements of my experience has been the exceptional faculty in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we endure. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our concerns and offering direction.

Although I didn’t fully embrace the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive moves I made initially, and it proved to be an excellent choice. It allowed me to forge significant connections with faculty members, which has been incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and I highly encourage making the most of these opportunities. The support they provide can greatly enhance your experience.

### Key Insights

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both before embarking on university life and throughout the year—was largely misplaced. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, help is always within reach. This year has shown me that I am never entirely alone and that it’s feasible to juggle academic demands such as exams and deadlines with enjoyable and fulfilling moments.

If I could extend a single piece of guidance to incoming students, it would be this: embrace the challenges, take those bold steps, and don’t hesitate to seek help when necessary. University is an era for personal development, and with the appropriate mindset and support, you will flourish.
