**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging headfirst into such a major transition felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a significant worry for you as well. I vividly recall my first day moving into my accommodation—the term hadn’t even commenced, yet I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today; I can proudly state that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
These relationships have become my second family here at Imperial, and it all started with a bit of casual conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings. What I’ve discovered is that taking that first step is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Facing the Academic Obstacles
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the progression from the first term to the second seemed even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others focusing on their studies and assume you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in navigating this was the realization that everyone else was experiencing similar feelings. If you struggle to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others share that sentiment. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill you can cultivate in your initial year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, I cannot stress enough how amazing the staff in the Materials department truly are. They genuinely want students to thrive and are fully cognizant of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open channels of communication with us and exhibited understanding towards our challenges.
While I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it earlier. Embracing the role of year well-being representative was one of the brave steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be a wonderful choice. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are ample opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and I highly encourage you to utilize these chances. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and assistance available—you can never receive too much support!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I had prior to starting university were unfounded. Whether it’s about forming friendships, facing academic hurdles, or managing stress, there’s always support to be found—from both faculty and fellow students. This year has taught me that I’m never alone, and that enjoying university life is possible even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. Starting university was a leap into the unknown, but it has been a path of growth, resilience, and remarkable experiences.
