Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year undergraduate. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So what have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a major worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I acquire? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, no need to fret! There will be countless ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, I learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t get it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from both your peers and the staff!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to student experiences and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to embrace the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of that!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be reduced with the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
