By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and joy. But what insights has this year provided, and how do I find myself at this point?
A significant and early challenge was forging friendships. This often serves as one of the most intimidating facets of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and engage with others. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all from engaging in casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? It’s advantageous to make a move at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fear not! There are numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to facilitate connections. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you will undoubtedly encounter like-minded individuals.
Another hurdle was navigating the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and even more so from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone shares this experience. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others do too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most critical skill to cultivate in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They express understanding and maintain open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I did not fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks before – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the support that is offered. One can never have too much backing!
In summary, this year has illustrated that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
