Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Dipping into the deep end wasn’t something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This is unquestionably one of the more daunting aspects of initiating university life, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it might pose one of your largest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was some casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you have to be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

An additional challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even bigger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are equally puzzled. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards students and keep in steady communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support being provided. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased with the numerous support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has showed me how to have fun amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
