By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This often poses one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a couple of days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, far too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly state that I have formed some of the finest friendships I have ever had, here at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals facing similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it is vital to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaker occasions and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse student body across the program and the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a transition from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being in this kind of environment can influence your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you find yourself puzzled by something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t comprehend it. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with our situations and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking risks earlier – I took one at the year’s onset by serving as a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the available assistance. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has communicated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased by the supportive resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment even in the presence of pressures like exams and deadlines.
