Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, ten months ago, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly introverted and reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fear-inducing elements of commencing university, and if you are viewing this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On the day I moved into my housing, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day concealed in my room due to my intimidation about stepping out to introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can say with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gather? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is usually the best route. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, it should be your true self. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re destined to meet people who resonate with you.

A further challenge was dealing with the workload and the level of difficulty of the material. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something difficult, I can practically assure you that there are a few others who do not grasp it either. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request assistance from your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and engage in continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until near the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps at the start; I indeed took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role gave me the chance to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance that is being offered to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the multitude of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has instructed me on how to have a good time while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
