Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with self-development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my housing, merely days before the semester started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking chances and events will help you mingle with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a wide array of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who share your mindset.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase in intensity compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, I can almost guarantee others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to excel and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They relate to our experiences and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned before about taking chances – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support mechanisms available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and taught me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
