Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a novice student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be one of your major worries. On my inaugural day settling into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in equivalent circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I recognized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that embracing your true self is essential. With a myriad of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first semester to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through these feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee others don’t either. Hence, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. They empathize with our experiences and maintain open communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned seizing opportunities – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to build rapport with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be soothed with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and how to have fun even amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
