Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unknown was not a situation my formerly shy self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may pose a significant worry. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I remained in my room the entire day, too frightened to step out and engage with others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with simple conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse crowd at the university, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in this type of environment can undermine your confidence; you may feel less capable relative to your peers. Keep in mind that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others feel the same. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is probably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep in touch with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until much later, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I became a well-being representative for the year, which allowed me to connect with the staff, an invaluable experience. There are numerous approaches to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the finest actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support that is available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehensions before starting university and those felt throughout the year are often unwarranted and can be eased through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
