Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most formidable challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of entering university, and for prospective students, it might represent one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes commencing, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, starting with some light conversation with others in comparable circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With a multitude of diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the intricacy of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can occasionally shake your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone is facing the same circumstances. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have an excess!

Ultimately, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be mitigated by the various support avenues provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
