Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a novice student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is surely one of the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may very well be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, daunted by the idea of stepping out and introducing myself to others. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I’ve realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

ANother significant challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be a strain on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in navigating through that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is on the same journey. If something doesn’t click for you, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing the same confusion. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and realize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Earlier, I mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In broad terms, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated through the diverse support resources available from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone, and it’s taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
